Think of galvanising as a superhero coating for steel, protecting it from corrosion. It sounds simple, but there’s a bit of magic in it. This protective layer is made of softer metals (mainly zinc), and the team needed a metal that would corrode so that the steel underneath didn’t have to corrode. This special coating is applied in galvanising plants using an exotic process called electroplating.
It’s all about appearance
The galvanised finish is truly a chameleon! They may look different depending on several factors, such as how long they were left in the zinc bath or the temperature used. Some finishes are shiny, some are dull, and sometimes the surface can even appear wavy due to the hot galvanising process. But hey, it’s all good!
