Here we explain in detail what “galvanising” really means, why it’s important and how to best care for it
Think of galvanising as a superhero coating for steel, protecting it from corrosion. It sounds simple, but there’s a bit of magic in it. This protective layer is made of softer metals (mainly zinc), and the team needed a metal that would corrode so that the steel underneath didn’t have to corrode. This special coating is applied in galvanising plants using an exotic process called electroplating.
It’s all about appearance
The galvanised finish is truly a chameleon! They may look different depending on several factors, such as how long they were left in the zinc bath or the temperature used. Some finishes are shiny, some are dull, and sometimes the surface can even appear wavy due to the hot galvanising process. But hey, it’s all good! Our formula ensures you get a tough finish, embracing these variations as part of its unique character.
Corrosion – not as scary as it sounds
Galvanic corrosion may sound like a complicated term, but it’s very simple. This occurs when dissimilar metals come together and have a conductor around them. It’s like an electronic party where one of the metals eventually wears out. A common example is the sacrificial anode in an outboard – it’s the life of the party and corrodes away to save the rest of the engine.
Invisible shield for your trailer
The trailer’s zinc plating acts like its own sacrificial anode. When exposed to moisture, whether from rain or ocean waves, it slowly dissolves, protecting your steel frame. Depending on where you take your trailer, this suit can last for a short time or a long time.
Tips for keeping your trailer happy
Here are some tips for making your trailer last longer: Keep your trailer clean, store it in a cool, ventilated area, and touch up any scratches with anti-corrosion paint. Show your trailer some love regularly and it will pay you back for years to come.
As your trailer ages, its surface will change, and this is completely normal. This is just a sign that the coating is doing its job. Parts rusty? Replace them early to prevent rust.
What not to do
Steer clear of acidic cleaners or harsh chemicals – they are no friend to your trailer’s galvanised surface.
Expect the best
